In upstream case why the total drift is BC but not distance between the point where it would have reached and the point where it has reached?

To find DC we are using the time taken for covering d, or say time taken for covering xd. How?

This is because the time taken to cross the river(width d) is the same time for which the swimmer is drifted by DC. Or by the time he crosses the river the velocity of river causes him to drift by dc.
