ok because if you connect the battery in the sense you are talking about
The current frlows from - to + in 20V battery and in 10 battery in rightward direction but in the original diagram you see that current flows from - to + in 10v
battery but it flows from - to + in leftward sense so you reverse it

consider the current in 20v battery, it will flow from ve terminal of 20v to -ve terminal of 20v so basically the current is flowing from -ve terminal of 10v to =ve terminal of 10 so it is increasing right? so we add the two potentials and it will be 30v.. hope this helps
