    Dude...on molecular level?... We are treating light as a wave here... if u mean by wavefront analysis then, as the wavefronts propagate, some of them are blocked by these crystals while the others move.. that is polarisation.... However, to make stuff simple, Maxwell gave us EM nature of light and this entire hypothesis is mainly based on that..

    Along the optic axis speed of E ray is same that of O ray but in other directions O ray speed is same as c/mu but for E ray it is different in different directions...
